How Leaves Began
"I understand first hand the responsibilities, difficulties and rewards of caring for a family member at home. I first became acquainted with care giving when my grandmother came to live with our family. Caring for others is a God given gift- one I look for in each and every care companion I hire. When my mother became terminally ill, both of my parents came to live with my husband and
me. We cared for her while also easing the burden and heartache my father felt. I have learned how valuable it is to serve the entire family. By being considerate of every family member affected in any situation, everyone benefits. Caring for my family was simply what I was taught to do and it seemed a natural part of me. It led me to help others who were experiencing similar life transitions. I found myself helping a few families with loved ones at Sentinel Pointe in Grand Rapids, Michigan (1992). The type of care I provided- sipping tea, playing board games, and taking them shopping or to the theater- was well-received as it gave family members a much needed break and provided residents with another source of companionship. Word spread, and soon I was too busy to handle the requests on my own. Simply out of obedience to God and sharing the gifts I had been given, Leaves Personal Care Services was founded. Our business name was birthed out of a project I had done in High School, that, again, represented family to me. I depicted leaves in their seasons which represented the seasons of our lives: the bursting new life of spring, the bright and cheerful long days of summer, and the fading days of autumn. It is my prayer that our caregiving will be a ministry of healing and loving support to our clients and their families."
